 2022 Preview 


       St. Paul's completed the 2021 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region one, the Saints earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. St. Paul's reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Pike Road by a score of 29-17.

       The Saints hope to get back closer to the 15-0 record in 2020.

       Over the past two seasons the Saints have gone 23-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, St. Paul's has gone a combined 131-29. Their 81.9% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, St. Paul's has gone a combined 231-82. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 6A and 20th in the AHSAA. The Saints have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2008.




       The Saints will be under the direction of new head football coach Ham Barnett as they enter the 2022 season.  Coach Barnett served as the defensive coordinator for the Saints last season.

       Coach Barnett's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 4-16 (20.0%).

       Braxton Byrd will be the starting quarterback for the Saints when the season opens. Look for another good season from St. Pauls in 2022.

       The St. Paul's Saints will play in Class 6A region one during the 2022 season. The Saints move up in classification to Class 6A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Saints have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 71-45 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 6A and 27th in the AHSAA. St. Paul's will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

       The Saints enter the 2022 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, St. Paul's has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Saints will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2009 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2022.

      

       The Saints open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent UMS-Wright on Friday, August 19 at E.E. Delaney Field. Last year the UMS-Wright Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 11-2 and in first place in Class 5A region one. The Bulldogs lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 5A playoffs to Andalusia by a score of 20-14.

       St. Paul's and UMS-Wright have met a total of 45 times on the football field. The Saints have a 22-23-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2021 with UMS-Wright winning by a score of 24-13.

       St. Paul's returns 5A All-State Senior defensive back Christopher Bracy. He was named to the second team last season.
